While attending a convent, St Mary’s, in Naini Tal, a Himalayan “hill station” a refuge from the searing heat of the plains, Dorothea received tuition from the nuns as part of the school curriculum, and in the last year at school she received special lessons in oil painting.

Presently Dorothea delights in varying her use of painting mediums.

Immigration to Australia with her parents, entry into the workforce, marriage and family took over for several years.

Later Dorothea became a member of Sherbrooke Art Society Inc - and art once again resumed its importance in her interests and pursuits.  Lessons from Alan Martin and Shirley Bourne, and most recently from Stuart Benson, who teaches at the Society’s Sherbrooke Gallery, have been invaluable to her progress and confidence.

Dorothea has won in-house competitions and despite very little promotion of her work it has been “highly commenced”.

ARTIST PROFILE:

Growing up in an isolated “Hill Station” as a pupil of St Mary’s Convent, I spent much of my spare time drawing with pencil and charcoal – there was no television or even radio to distract me! The nuns noticed my work and so much of it was displayed a the school’s annual Art Show that was jokingly labelled as “Dorothea’s one-man show”, there being no political correctness in that era.

During my last year in school I received art lessons from a delightfully absent-minded French nun. These were some of my happiest hours.

Having completed the Senior Cambridge exams and a Pitman’s course, I migrated with my parents to Australia, arriving in Perth on March 28.

Marriage followed, and three lusty sons; and thirty-two years of secretarial work! Art, although tucked in the background, was always there.

Later, art became an important part of my life, especially when my family lived in Belgrave and I became involved with the Sherbrooke Art Society, as a member and serving twice as president. Much valued and highly enjoyable art tuition from Alan Martin and Shirley Bourne was a further support and inspiration.

My work has been highly commended and I have won in-house competitions.

I feel that the value of art as a means of reaching out to all – sympathy and sharing by means of a brushstroke and an emphasis on colour – is a gift beyond price.
