ARTIST PROFILE:
MY MIND WANTS TO PAINT THINGS AS THEY ARE
BUT MY HAND AND MY EYE SEE A DIFFERENCE.

I’m compelled to paint, firstly to explore that difference, and secondly because I’m hooked on the joy of creating.

My approach to any given painting can vary, but my favoured starting point is in some way akin to the philosophical tenet of ‘NOT DOING’.
A concept of “without mind” that forms part of many esoteric teachings particularly Zen and Taoism.
My aim therefore is to let a painting happen. This means keeping the conscious mind in the background, particularly in the early stages, and allowing the form to emerge. Then if I am lucky flashes of enlightenment or serendipity keep me going.
Using an experimental approach I aim to recreate a memory, both visual, and emotional.
Allowing abstract forms to morf into shapes that somehow are perceived as landscapes.

REALITY IS ONLY A STATE OF PERCEPTION.
